Fire protection coating for school in Luxembourg
Fire protection is a hot topic in timber construction. In addition to technical equipment, coatings also offer the possibility of reducing the fire load for wooden elements in interior areas - coatings such as Pyrolan Expand from ADLER, which was recently used for the Prënz Charles school in Luxembourg, planned by Architecte Lorang sàrl.

Increasingly, fire protection coatings are also becoming an issue for exposed wooden surfaces in interior areas. Together with the local fire department, the timber construction company Rollingertec, the architectural firm Architecte Lorang sàrl and the structural engineers Schroeder & Associéswere looking for a solution for a new school building in Steinsel, Luxembourg - and found it in Pyrolan Expand from ADLER. The water-based fire protection coating develops a solid carbon foam when exposed to high heat, which wraps itself around the wood like a protective coating and thus massively inhibits the speed and spread of fire. And because the coating is free from formaldehyde, biocides, heavy metals and halogens, no toxic substances are released in the event of a fire.
Protection & Beauty
Another advantage of Pyrolan Expand is that the coating can also be easily applied directly on site - in this case, the already installed wooden elements were painted by a painter from Heiles Raumgestaltung und Fassaden of the company Heiles Raumgestaltung und Fassaden from Mersch using the Pyrolan Expand Base primer coat in the color spruce and then coated with the colorless Pyrolan Expand Top protective coating. The glaze finish ensures the highest possible fire protection effect and an excellent surface quality at the same time: the natural beauty of the wood is retained and it is also pleasant to the touch. In addition to various characteristic wood shades, opaque shades are also available.
Bright & Friendly
In the Prënz Charles elementary school, the light-colored wooden surfaces in combination with the spacious, elegant wood-aluminum windows - which were primed with Aquawood Primo, intermediate coated with Aquawood Intermedio FlowQ and painted with Aquawood Nativa by the manufacturer, ADLER customer Schreinerei Vincent Messerich- create an inviting, friendly learning atmosphere. Incidentally, the impressive building was personally opened in spring 2025 by its namesake, the then four-year-old Prince Charles, son of Grand Duchess Stéphanie and Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg.
