ADLER: UV protection for exposed wood surfaces in interior areas

Wood is the construction material of the past, the present and the future: it has proven its worth over millennia and is firmly anchored in our traditions, but now this sustainable, environmentally friendly raw material is rising up to new architectural heights.

From a 24-storey block of flats to a suspension bridge, from a lookout tower to a waste management centre, from an exclusive complex of villas to a housing estate – there's almost nothing that can't be built from this ultra-modern construction material. More and more architects and designers are opting to use spruce, larch, silver fir and other softwoods. And those who choose wood are keen to show it too: there are very few wooden buildings that don't feature exposed wooden surfaces in their interior. And it's no wonder: the light-coloured, warm walls and ceilings made from this natural material provide a very pleasant living atmosphere. They create a homely, cosy feel, whilst at the same time being elegant, understated and stylish. But to retain this friendly living atmosphere in the long-term, wooden surfaces in interior areas need the right protection: ADLER's Lignovit Interior UV 100 enhances the characteristic beauty of the wood whilst protecting it against yellowing and darkening!

Retain character

As soon as wood is exposed to light, the components of the wood – in particular lignin – start to break down, resulting in a change of colour. This undesirable effect can only be avoided by applying an appropriate surface treatment. ADLER has therefore developed Lignovit Interior UV 100 especially for softwoods used in interior areas. We have added light stabilisers to this water-based glaze which absorb UV rays and stabilise the lignin in the wood: the matt, transparent glaze ensures that the attractive appearance of the surface will stand the test of time.

Protection and design

In particular in modern architecture with its bright, light-flooded rooms and large areas of window, this surface protection is absolutely essential. Many manufacturers of components for timber construction therefore give their exposed wooden surfaces a coat of ADLERLignovit Interior UV 100 whilst still in the factory, and in doing so get a further additional benefit: this thin layer of glaze also protects the wood against moisture, dirt and damage during transportation and assembly. It's also possible to achieve a range of different design effects: Lignovit Interior UV 100 is available in a wide variety of colours – from the gentle cream "Mont Blanc" and the naturally light-coloured "Zugspitz" through to "Spok" which is somewhat greyer. And of course, this glaze, which has been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel, is free from chemical wood preservatives and safe to use in interior spaces: thanks to its high degree of breathability, it ensures a healthy living environment!

ADLER – paint runs through our veins

With 670 employees, ADLER is Austria's leading manufacturer of varnishes, paints and wood preservatives. Founded in 1934 by Johann Berghofer, this family business is now managed by a member of the third generation, Andrea Berghofer. Every year, 22,000 tonnes of paint leave the Schwaz plant and are delivered to customers in more than 30 countries worldwide. ADLER has sales subsidiaries in Germany, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia; their sole production site is the ADLER-Werk Lackfabrik in Schwaz, Tyrol (Austria). ADLER was one of the first companies in its sector to be 100% climate-neutral (since 2018). The company has been able to reduce its carbon footprint to a minimum through a wide range of measures. ADLER offsets any unavoidable residual emissions through the purchase of recognised climate protection certificates, thereby helping to finance new climate protection projects.
